''Al-Bar’ah, music and dance of Oman Dhofari valleys'' UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2010

Al-Bar’ah is a Bedouin musical tradition from the Dhofar mountains in southern Oman. It takes the form of a warlike dance performed to drums and the chanting of poetry in a local tribal dialect. Al-Bar’ah is performed in a half circle formed by ten to thirty men and women. As they chant and clap, two male dancers holding khanjars (daggers) perform codified dance movements, brandishing their daggers above shoulder level. The dancers’ steps are uncomplicated, but coordination with other performers and the music requires considerable skill..

Le chef d’orchestre et violoniste corse Jean-Christophe Spinosi, réputé pour sa fibre baroque, est l'invité du Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Après l'ouverture des deux opéras, Platée de Rameau et Serse d’Haendel, la deuxième partie du concert nous transpose à l’époque impressionniste avec des œuvres tout aussi attrayantes de Debussy et Ravel, deux génies de l’orchestration.

Dans le cadre du cycle Caminos, le musée du Quai Branly part pour le Nouveau Monde à la découverte de l'autre moitié du patrimoine musical baroque universel, née de l'évangélisation chrétienne en Amérique Latine.

Quel mystère de création artistique et de transmission au travers des siècles se cachent derrière les cérémoniaux des jeunes Indiens moxenos de l'Orient Bolivien ? Dépositaires d’archives de musique baroque qu’ils vont collecter en remontant le fleuve Mamoré, ces jeunes Indiens moxenos reconstituent, année après année, le patrimoine musical des fameuses « réductions jésuites » de l’Amazonie, que l'on croyait, voici encore peu, pouvoir attribuer au seul compositeur italien Domenico Zipoli. Mais l'importance de ce corpus musical, souvent apparu après l'expulsion des jésuites, semble indiquer que ces signes imposés pour les besoins de l'évangélisation catholique ont fait l'objet d'une véritable réappropriation, devant littéralement un baroque indien dont le processus de transmission à la fois oral et écrite reste une énigme pour les musicologues.

A la fois chanteurs, instrumentistes et danseurs, les vingt jeunes musiciens de San Ignacio Moxos sont désormais les dépositaires les plus remarquables de ce Baroque vivant.

THE PHRYGIAN MUSIC

In classical music, a descending tetrachord (line of four notes) with intervals tone-tone-semitone can be called a Phrygian progression, and forms the basis of the Phrygian mode.

The Phrygian mode is equivalent to the Dorian mode in ancient Greek musicology (due to a misinterpretation of the Latin texts of Boethius, medieval modes were given the wrong Greek names by the early Christian church in the 8^th century).

The Phrygian diatonic scale is simply two Phrygian tetrachords separated by a whole tone. Melodies written in the Phrygian scale have a distinctive mood to them, characterised by the minor sound (due to the minor third) and a slightly unexpected lowered second degree.
